In a world that revolves around social media, you know how important it is for your brand or business to be present on social platforms, but which ones? Social media is one of the cheapest forms of marketing available and with over 81% of the U.S. population having at least one social media profile, it is important you are investing in your brand. There are multiple social media apps to pick from, but the real question is, which one is the best one– and no Myspace didn’t make the cut. I am going to go through the top 5 social media platforms that your business should use and why. 

Of course, Facebook is number 1. With over 1 billion current users why wouldn’t it be at the top? With that many users, you are bound to find your target audience and generate some new clients or customers. While the majority of these platforms I will be discussing are being used organically, Facebook has paid advertising options that could also benefit you. Whether your goal is brand awareness, website traffic, lead generation, or conversions, Facebook would be your go-to platform. This tool could be perfect for any business because you can target by age, gender, employment, and interests that make sure your brand is being shown to people that need or want it. If spending money is not your goal right now, you can still use Facebook for your business organically and utilize two-way communication between your brand and your customer with their messaging app.

Coming in second, Instagram. This platform used to only be good for posting a picture, but then expanded to videos and stories, which made this app a great way for companies to show who they are, what they do, and what they stand for. This can be to your advantage since studies show that people remember 80% of what they see rather than what they read or hear. Additionally, 64% of Instagram users are between the age of 18 and 34, which means if your company is targeting mid to younger individuals then Instagram is where you need to be. 

Next up is Twitter. A place to mainly share stories, news articles, or memes, can also be a great place to engage with your audience. Twitter is most known for having ‘real-time’ updates but replying back to customers shows them that you are involved. However, keep in mind that 1 tweet a day won’t cut it. You will need multiple tweets a day to stand out against the crowd. 

Down to number four, LinkedIn. This platform is less about ‘look what I’m doing’ and more about creating professional networks. If you are looking for a new job this would be a great place to look, however, it can also be used for finding business partners or new B2B customers. Additionally, businesses often use this platform to educate or share webinars to others. Because LinkedIn is seen for more professional uses, users are more likely going to include accurate information about employers, job positions, and work emails as opposed to other platforms. 

YouTube sitting at number 5 is strictly a video-based platform. If you are looking for pure entertainment or reviews on certain items you’d like to buy, then you found your spot. This is a great way to show your brand’s personality or how your products work. The key here is to optimize your videos so they can actually get views. However, an additional feature of YouTube is the access to Google’s advertising platform and running YouTube ads before or in between videos. 

Of course, these are only the top 5 most used social media platforms and there are other places like, Spotify, podcasts, and Pinterest that could be beneficial to your brand depending on your target market. Make sure to do your research and find out where your target market hangs out.
