Accounting… sounds boring right?
In pop-culture and the media, we portray accountants as dry, dull, and more-or-less super tedious. So why would you want to work in finance? Accounting is more than just crunching numbers; at the root of the work, it’s about helping people and ensuring that a business succeeds. Working as a financial specialist for a small business is very rewarding, as the work I’m doing is fueling the growth of someone’s passion project. Especially with this company’s story and where we began, it’s incredible to see our growth over time, and to see myself considered a viable asset in the future growth of the company.
Let me say that accounting is actually incredibly satisfying and you don’t need to be a math genius to excel in the field.
In all honesty, I was never the best at algebraic equations or all things math. When it came to money and simple arithmetic, everything started to click. I think for many individuals, the word “accounting” can be intimidating. I know I was when I first got into it, but once I invested myself in the subject and really dedicated my time to learning, it was no longer a big scary math equation that only the gifted could conquer. In layman’s terms, accounting is this huge puzzle, and your job is to find the pieces to make everything fit perfectly. Sure, you may have to dedicate more time to the difficult parts, but at the end of the day, there’s nothing more satisfying than making a flawless bank statement or completing reconciliation.
So why work in finance?
Finance is really an umbrella term for so many different jobs; but in regards to accounting, there are many reasons you might want to pursue the occupation. Don’t let the stereotypes stop you! Here are a few of the reasons I decided to pursue accounting. There is an undeniable importance of accounting in business. Every functioning company needs some form of accounting. Without an accounting department, people wouldn’t get paid, invoices could easily be swept under the rug, and your business will lose money. Knowing that you have such a strong hand in helping a business grow is incredibly rewarding. In addition to that, it’s fun and exciting. Not only is it pretty simple to master, but you’re basically solving puzzles all day; and who wouldn’t want to do that.
Okay, maybe there are some people who wouldn’t want to do that. Anyone who enjoys work that is mentally stimulating and changes day-to-day would have a blast in accounting. Especially knowing that it’s an extremely important part in helping the business grow.
In regards to growth in the field of accounting, my personal end goal is still undecided. There is so much room for growth and improvement in finance. As you log more hours accounting and more experience, you become a more valuable asset and can move up on the ladder all the way to CFO or branch off and become a Financial Advisor. It’s extremely beneficial to learn how a company works. Being able to see the inside and understand how the smallest of things can make the biggest difference in a business is truly enlightening. The experience of working in an environment with a heartfelt culture makes each day much more enjoyable.
